The Event: How Racist Are You? with Jane Elliott
WHITE ALLIES, anyone who wonders why POC make a big deal about being discriminated against, or just anyone who’s interested, PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO. AND REMEMBER THE NAME… JANE ELLIOT. White allies watch and observe how Jane rolls.
There are a lot of things wrong with this video and I’m gonna tell yall what they are.
Favorite person: Wanda Summers
Least favorite: Terry Taylor
Let’s start with the actual experiment. First of all, people can figure it out at a glance. They’re adults, they know it’s an experiment about racism. To prevent this skewing results, The Bitch tells everyone straight up what they’re going to do, and lets the ones who won’t cooperate leave. Already, this makes the experiment completely inapplicable to real life, unlike the experiment with kindergarteners.
Secondly, let’s consider the roles each group is playing.
Blue eyes: Oppressed groups (specifically black people)
Brown eyes: ”Privileged,” unoppressed ethnicities
The main problem I see with this is that there are no black people with blue eyes
yes i know they’re just insanely rare. Both The Bitch and the media say again and again “the white people who are being oppressed are in denial, it’s the white people who aren’t understanding this role reversal.” There were also plenty of white people on both sides who pretty easily got with the program. However, because it was only white people being “oppressed,” no one took them seriously. When you actually consider what they were trying to say, THEN you can judge them.
So let’s do just that, shall we?
Let’s start with my least favorite person, Terry Taylor, the blonde white schoolteacher who directly contradicted herself in several ways and was in complete denial the entire time. She tried to equate being black with not enjoying looking nice. Of course this is a ridiculous argument. But it got me thinking. What about that guy who said he was being discriminated against for being fat? What about that guy who talked about skinheads? ”Oh, you can lose the tubby. You can let your hair grow.” But what if you can’t?
My dad is both a skinhead and tubby, and he’s tried so, SO hard to change both of those things. He’s worked out until he was screaming from the pain in his legs and abs and had to use two towels to mop up the sweat. He’s spent hundreds on hair growth pills and special shampoos and hours upon hours researching diets or supplements that will promote healthy hair. Turns out he can’t just “lose the tubby” or “let it grow” any more than a black person can change their skin color.
Let’s also talk about the people who were thrown out of the experiment. They were shamelessly accused of being in denial, of not understanding or recognizing a problem, but maybe, just maybe, they didn’t feel like they had to put up with what they were being asked to do. As my favorite person Wanda said, the blue-eyes were just being picked on, and as the (noticeably nameless) boy at the beginning said, the brown-eyes were just being bullies. Remember, this experiment is not applicable to real life, so no one’s really learning a lesson any more than just giving a speech would teach them. Why should someone who has the option to just leave bother to put up with that?
What I’m more concerned about is that no one in the brown-eyes said anything while everyone was arguing. Yes, that one “tall white male,” stuck in a few words when asked, and Pearl Jarrett the “black female” spoke up after being put up in the front of the room, but mostly they all just sat back and watched The Bitch throw people out! What I would have liked to see is a few people at least consider what the blue-eyes had to say, but not one person said a single kind word, let alone an actual argument! Of course, The Bitch wouldn’t allow it, but that’s just one more reason this whole experiment is ridiculous; rather than let it become a productive, thought-provoking argument, she actively causes it to become a fight, and no one can fight with The Bitch because she’ll sic her dogs on you. Nameless Boy was absolutely right—in this experiment, The Bitch marginalizes everyone, not just the ones who are supposed to feel marginalized.
One guy did try to apply the experiment to real life for a moment before he was forced to leave. He said “when it happens out there in the real world, people make a stand. It’s against the law and people make a stand.” Flash back to the 60s! To the Civil War! To the American Revolution, if we want to apply to all oppression and not just black people. Have you ever witnessed a lynching? Because if this were real life, we’d probably watch The Bitch get lynched!
My second-least favorite person? Pearl Jarrett. For over five minutes she and Terry Taylor just went back and forth making complete fools of themselves. Let’s assume that Mrs. Jarrett’s little anecdote about standing in a queue was actually life experience and not the most massive cliché in history. Well, Mrs. Jarrett, that’s a prime example of racism. I’m not going to deny that it exists; I’m sure stuff like that happens every day. But do I think you’ve actually watched your son get stopped and searched? Absolutely not. What sensible cop is going to stop a kid and search him in the middle of the street with his mother right there?! And a very high class mother at that; a business consultant with hoop earrings and too much makeup—who in their right mind would ever think that looked suspicious? Same with a kid running for the bus; I can guarantee his mother was not right there running with him, because if she was, he would never have been stopped, no matter how suspicious he looked.
And Terry Taylor tried to say that well anyone get can get stopped and searched, like that’s everyone’s problem. Oh, Terry. Terry, Terry, Terry. What planet do you live on? She did bring up one more good point, though. ”You keep saying statistics, I’m sorry….” How do we know that a black child is specifically eight times more likely to get searched than a white one? Pearl could put out any old number she wanted and sound believable. It’s unlikely, certainly not impossible, but unlikely that anyone would know a statistic like that off the top of their head. That’s what made me question all of Mrs. Jarrett’s fun little anecdotes in the first place.
My favorite part in this video, however, is what I would like to call, if it were a book:
Wanda Makes a Stand
Wanda is white, but has brown eyes, so according to The Bitch she would be in the same position of power she’s always been in. Until now, it seems like she’s just another pacifist who’s a little uncomfortable with the concept but willing to play through it to not get chewed out by The Bitch’s dogs. Turns out, she’s the most qualified to speak out of anyone in the building. She’s a white girl who was raised in an area predominantly nonwhite—she was a victim of racism against white people, which is a thing despite what some people may have to say, so she of all people should sympathize with the black people in this scenario.
Now is the time when we don’t say, “clearly she’s just another white person who’s been brainwashed by society.”
We do not say “how ironic that she doesn’t recognize a problem when she’s supposedly been a victim herself.”
And we mostly, definitely never say “well I’m sure she just made the whole thing up.”
Wanda Summers came to the same conclusion I did; that this experiment is useless and impractical, that it’s just making brown-eyes into bullies and blue-eyes into victims, that it’s marginalizing everyone in the room except The Bitch for absolutely no reason at all. Furthermore, she’s realized that all the brown-eyes have just gone with it because they aren’t the ones being picked on, because they have the superpower on their side, and maybe even because they’re a little bit bullies themselves. She’s realized that the blue-eyes aren’t learning their lesson not necessarily because they don’t believe there’s anything to be learned, but because they know this is not the way to teach them.
She’s realized that maybe it’s not just white people who’ve been brainwashed.
Okay yall, I’m about to get real controversial up in here, and if you ain’t walkin in to this with an open fuckin mind, you better leave right here and now. We’re gonna be civilized about this whether you like it or not.
I have a theory.
Yes, some white people, like Terry Taylor, can be completely oblivious to the issue of racism in first-world countries. Some. But I believe that a few people in a few minorities have also been brainwashed into thinking they are actively oppressed. Wait, wait, hear me out now before you start screaming. Pearl Jarrett, I’m looking at you. Of course, there are such things as racist cops who will stop and search a black kid just because he’s running in the street. Again, I will not deny that racism exists. But are black people really oppressed on a societal level?
I’m not going to go into detail, but the answer is no. That isn’t the point I’m trying to make here, and it’s a dumb question with an obvious answer anyway.
So first of all, how does a person become a racist? It starts from birth, of course, just as the implementation of any societal standard does. From a young age, a parent might tell their child that “the black people are inferior.” Likewise, a black child can also be made to believe that “the white people look down on us” or “we are an oppressed race.” Rather than considering the facts—there is a black president, black churches, black dating sites, and even scholarships exclusive to black people—a black child can easily grow up believing that black people everywhere are trod upon by white society. In Pearl Jarrett’s case specifically, this is especially ridiculous because, being a business consultant, she’s in a higher economic class than Wanda the manager or even Terry the schoolteacher.
In my own humble opinion, black people are anything but oppressed. Were a white person to create a WhitePeopleMeet.com, they would immediately be shamed by society as racist. Were a black person to create a WhitePeopleMeet.com, they would receive a very different reaction. If you’d like me to outline it for you, I can, but I won’t here because it’s long and complicated and not the point.
As it so happens, a corporation created BlackPeopleMeet.com, and yes, this corporation is headed by a white person, because this person is really, really smart. He’s realized that black people like being catered to, that they like being exclusive, just like any other group, but they’re the only ones who it’s socially acceptable to do this for.
The question I’m currently attempting to answer without putting out extremely snobbish, racist hypotheses in public is WHY.
Now, consider this, and if it changes your opinion of this paper at all, I can quite certainly say that you are a racist:
I am a white American male with brown hair and blue eyes.
And the next issue I’d like to address is ageism:
